# Networking

> Give your agents a fixed IP, or a route into your own network. Set up a gateway, then pick it on an environment.

By default, agents reach the public internet from Asteroid's network. A **gateway** changes where that traffic goes. Use one when an app only accepts known IPs, or only exists inside your network.

## Pick a gateway type

| You need | Use | What you run |
| - | - | - |
| One fixed source IP that a site can allowlist | [Sticky IP](/networking/sticky-ip) | Nothing |
| Apps on your tailnet | [Tailscale](/networking/tailscale) | A Tailscale auth key |
| Apps on a private network with no VPN you can share | [Asteroid Tunnel](/networking/asteroid-tunnel) | A small program on one or more of your machines. Outbound 443 only. |

## Plans

Every gateway type needs a plan that includes it. This applies to Sticky IP and Tailscale as much as to Asteroid Tunnel.

| Gateway type | Plan |
| - | - |
| Sticky IP | Scale and above |
| Tailscale | Scale and above |
| Asteroid Tunnel | Not in any standard plan. Contact Asteroid to add it. |

A type your plan does not include shows a plan badge. Click it to see how to upgrade, or contact the Asteroid team to add the type to your plan.

## Create a gateway

Any member of the organization can create a gateway of a type the plan includes.

1. Open **Environments** in the sidebar, then the **Gateways** tab.
2. Click **New gateway** and pick a type.
3. Name it, fill in the fields for that type, and click **Create gateway**.

The gateway shows **Connecting** until it is ready, then **Connected**.

## Use a gateway

A gateway does nothing until an environment uses it.

1. Open a [custom environment](/concepts/environments#custom-environments) and click **Edit**.
2. Under **Networking**, pick **Gateway**, then pick the gateway.
3. Save.

Every run on that environment now sends its traffic through the gateway. One gateway can serve many environments. The gateway drawer lists them under **Environments**.

## Change or remove a gateway

Click a gateway to open its drawer.

* **Edit** changes the name and the settings for its type. Save once.
* **Enabled** off keeps the gateway configured, but it takes no new runs.
* **Delete** removes it. Environments that use it lose their route, so move them first.

Edit and Delete need the gateway's type in your plan. Runs on an existing gateway keep working if the plan changes, but to change or remove it, contact the Asteroid team.
